Why Visit Makuleke for Birding?

Makuleke boasts over 450 bird species, thanks to its diverse habitats including riverine forests, seasonal wetland pans, and baobab-studded ridges. The Limpopo and Luvuvhu Rivers act as vital lifelines, attracting a remarkable variety of resident and migratory birds. Many of the region’s sought-after species can only be found in this remote northern section of Kruger National Park. In fact, Makuleke marks the southernmost limit of the range for specials like the Racket-tailed Roller, Böhm’s Spinetail, and Mottled Spinetail—making it the only place in South Africa where these species can be seen. This unique biodiversity makes the concession a standout destination for avid birders.

Some of the key species you might encounter:

  • Pel’s Fishing Owl
  • Racket-tailed Roller
  • Three-banded Courser
  • Böhm’s Spinetail
  • Arnot’s Chat
  • Tropical Boubou
  • White-crowned Lapwing
  • Southern Yellow White-eye
  • Black-throated Wattle-eye
  • Lemon-breasted Canary

Birding is especially rewarding during the summer months (November to March), when migratory species arrive in breeding plumage and wetland areas come alive with activity.

Iconic Birding Hotspots

  • Lanner Gorge: A dramatic canyon where raptors can often be seen soaring overhead.
  • Limpopo River Floodplain: Rich in riparian birdlife and ideal for walking safaris.
  • Seasonal pans: Temporary wetlands that attract a variety of waterbirds and waders.

Please note: These iconic birding hotspots—Lanner Gorge, the Limpopo River floodplain, and the seasonal pans—are located within the private Makuleke Concession and are only accessible to guests staying within the concession. This exclusivity ensures a truly immersive and uncrowded birding experience

Accommodation and Ideal Stay

Stay in luxury tented camps or eco-lodges within the concession, where experienced guides lead tailored birding walks and game drives. For the best experience, plan at least a 4–5 day stay to fully explore the region’s diversity at a relaxed pace. While the luxury lodges may seem like the only accommodation option, we can often assist in arranging a more affordable alternative that still offers direct access to all the splendour of the Makuleke Concession.

Best Time to Travel

The wet season (November–March) is ideal for birding, with peak diversity, vibrant plumages, and the arrival of migratory species from the north. This time of year brings lush vegetation and active birdlife across a variety of habitats. In contrast, the dry season (June–September) offers easier sightings thanks to more open vegetation. Although the Limpopo River may run dry and seasonal pans begin to disappear, these remaining water sources become critical gathering points, concentrating bird numbers and offering excellent photographic and viewing opportunities.
